ARTISTS STATEMENT. Photography, abstraction, long exposures, other worlds

ARTISTS STATEMENT

My name is Alexey Shibanov—I explore the boundaries of the visible, transforming fleeting moments into living canvases. Based in Novosibirsk and drawing from my academic background (I Visual Art), I work with analog aesthetics as a language through which the world speaks in the whisper of grain, the tremble of light, and the mystery of motion.

My tools are a vintage Helios lens reborn as a monocle, long exposures, and a deliberate rejection of digital sterility. I do not simply capture images—I reveal hidden layers of reality: what escapes the eye but lingers in the subconscious. Grain, blur, and “floating” forms are not flaws but traces of energy and time imprinted within the frame. My color palette is a subjective cipher, transforming familiar scenes into surreal depths.

For me, photography is alchemy—it breathes life into stillness, making the air vibrate and shadows pulse. It is not documentation but a dialogue with the world, where each frame poses the question: What if we look differently?

My style is an intentional homage to analog aesthetics. I consciously step away from crisp digital imagery, transforming it into something resembling handcrafted drawings or film photographs. This is not mere stylization but a reimagining of the digital through the warmth and depth of analog, creating images that feel alive, almost tactile.

I believe in the power of simplicity—it defines my approach to capturing people, turning them into ethereal figures through my lens, free from forced poses. I thrive on documenting live processes without interference, preserving the raw uniqueness of unfolding moments. I am drawn to remote, hard-to-reach corners of the world, immersing my subjects in nature’s embrace.

I invite you to join me on a journey through intangible realms, where matter dissolves into weightlessness and reality blurs into dreams.
